Normally I don’t report on anything that STIHL does, as I’m not big on leaf blowers. However, the ad department came up with a very interesting ad campaign: a calendar that peels itself off. You can watch a video of it after the jump, and it works by simply ripping out the book binding thread that mounts the pages together.

Curious Displays from Julia Tsao on Vimeo . Okay, I usually like to have a still shot of what I’m reporting, but could only find this video. However, a picture wouldn’t say a thousand words on this, and this video speaks volumes.

For some reason strange mishaps tend to happen around me. I stumble over invisible objects and usually if someone is casually tossing anything, it will definitely come in contact with my head when I’m not looking. Which means I’m also one of those people that collides with others as I round the corners of buildings. Thankfully, it actually appears that I’m not the only one. Especially since someone designed a gadget that is made to alert people of someone else’s presence before they collide. It does this by lighting up and beeping on the other side of the corner as you’re going around it. Then if you hear the beep you can slow down or somehow attempt to avert running into a complete stranger. Unfortunately, it’s a concept design. Plus, it’s unlikely that cities will spend the amount of cash it would take to get these installed on every single corner. In case you don’t want to live in this Gyre Floating city , you might want to live in this building here, which has been known as “waterscraper” or “seascraper”. I believe that the formal name is the hO2+ scraper. It is an attempt at making a skyscraper underwater, but I think we can emphasize the word “scrape”

This particular gadget is known as the O Kitchen, a concept device created by a team of Brazilian designers. I suppose it is named the O Kitchen because it can fold up into a large ball. Yet without a hole in the middle, I wouldn’t call it an “O”

Of all the watches I’ve come across, this is probably one of the strangest out there. It has straight forwards hands, and convenient notches to help you read the time. Really, while it is strange, it is extremely straightforward as far as reading the time goes. Which to me is perfectly fine. I wouldn’t want to deal with a watch that you can barely read on a regular basis. The big twist with this watch is that the back of it is completely clear. It’ll show through every last one of your arm hairs. Making it even more true when you say the time is a hair past a freckle. I’m not sure that I’d want my arm featured so much that it’s the backing to my watch, but maybe you’re proud of the way your wrists look. You might have to wait a while to get your hands on one of these though. As of now they’re just a concept design by Jihun Yeom

If you’re tired of all of your speakers lacking any organic gadget feel, then this speaker system should be a nice change. Instead of trying to look like every other cutting edge speaker system out there, these take a cue from the trees. This system makes it so that it looks like a bright white trunk is slowly growing up from the floor and the speakers sprout out of the side of the trunk. The bright white contrasted with the black gives the set a very modern feel, all the while still being earthy. It’ll give you the best of both worlds. The low tone speakers are closer to the ground, while the high pitched sounds go towards the top. They’re capable of being stacked together or even used separately. These speakers are a concept design by Marcos Ignacio Madia. That also means that these will probably be a little hard to get your hands on

What you are seeing here is the Sustainable City Lights concept project from our friends at Philips. Yes, Philips has given us many terrific products in the past few decades, and I cannot help think that this one seems really obvious. You see, our streets just have to be lit at night, right
