This Smart Helmet, developed by Northeastern University researchers, is designed for skiers, even though I never remember skiing with a helmet on. Of course, I never biked with a helmet on either, and I think that is a requirement now. I don’t know about wearing a helm on the slopes.

I’m sure that comes as no surprise, as what could be better for training a soldier to go into enemy territory than an FPS game. Believe it or not, these are also being used to train medics.

I am one of the many that has a job that puts me in front of a computer for a large part of my day. I try my best to find ways to get some extra exercise to compensate and so far have not had any health issues. However, I often worry that what I do is not nearly enough. I could buy one of those silly pedometers, but it just tracks how many steps I take. This tracks quite a bit more than that and allows for you to evaluate your progress over time.

Philips develops roadside drug test

One quick blow on a device and cops can find out just how much alcohol you’ve consumed. Sadly though, so far they haven’t had a roadside way to test for drugs. Which means cops have to drag in people that they suspect to be using drugs. Well that will be changing at some point in the somewhat near future. Instead of dragging people down to the station for a test, Philips has a test they’ve developed to help cops out on the side of the road. It uses nanotechnology and instead of blowing like you’d do for the alcohol test, you spit. Then after 90 seconds it gives a color coded read out. It will detect any cocaine, heroin, cannabis, amphetamines and methaphetamine. This isn’t exactly great for drug users, but for those that don’t use drugs and just seem to look the part this is definitely good news. It will end any harassment much faster through a quick test. Philips hopes to get these out to cops in Europe by the end of this year. There’s no word when it will make it to the US though.
